Does your website feel a bit busted?
Do you ever stop and think “I’m a creative business owner, what the heck do I know about website optimization and SEO and meta tags?” It can sometimes feel like a full-time job trying to grasp these things. BUT it doesn’t have to be so complicated. Here are a few quick tips to get your website working harder for you so you can go back to being the amazing Canadian creative you are:
1. Analyze
Hubspot has a free Website Grader to check how your efforts are going. Check performance (ie. image sizes, page speed, browser caching), SEO, mobile views, & security. It will flag issues that could impact your search results & performance.
2. Write Title Tag + Meta Descriptions
Title tags are clickable headlines that appear in search results and are critical from an SEO perspective.
– Be sure to include target keywords.
– Keep it descriptive but concise
– Avoid creating duplicate title tags
Meta descriptions is the brief summary of a page that is displayed below your title tag in search results. Most descriptions do not impact search rankings, but they can influence click-through rates.
3. Submit sitemap & verify site with Google
This is a bit too complicated to detail in this post, but it's easy to Google & follow instructions.
Sitemaps are an important tool for getting your site discovered by search engines. Add your site map to Google’s Search Console for better indexing.
Google site verification is about proving you own a site you’re trying to add. Google doesn’t want to give powers to just anyone so it requires webmasters to complete the Search Console verification process.
4. Use Internal Links
An internal link is any link from one page to another on your website. Contextual links (links within your content) point users to interesting & related content. They allow search engines to find what content is related & determine the value. The more links a page receives, the more important it will seem to search engines.
5. Publish Long Form Content
Long-form content ranks better on Google. So start blogging! Posts with 3000+ words get 3x more traffic and 4x more shares. Be sure to target keywords.
These are just a few simple rules that we follow to keep our websites ranking high. Was this helpful? Let us know and don’t forget to save this post for later 👆.
